Illuminations

If in your heart you make
          a manger for his birth,
          then God will once again
          become a child on earth.
          -Angelus Silesius (1624 - 1677)

These pieces explore the alchemical idea that actions performed in the physical world have a corresponding reaction in the interior spiritual world. They are created with materials made from recipes created by actual medieval alchemists. Many of the paints are handmade from semiprecious stones, plant and animal sources. Many of the processes of these recipes are deeply linked to spiritual symbolism.  For example, the pieces are, for the most part, painted on animal skin parchment which represented the human body. By painting on it, the artist joins body and soul.

22k gold leaf, which is applied to a raised bed of gesso, is also used. This process also has great spiritual symbolism. The gesso, made from a combination of glue and clay, is likened to the earth from which the Divine formed Adam, the first man. For more on the meaning of this process see: Finding the Sacred in Contemporary Art and my forthcoming book Lapis & Gold: Unlocking the Secrets of Medieval Illuminators.
